6th Annual Nelson Mandela Commemoration

Â

On Sunday, December 1st, 2019, the Immigrant & Refugee Resource Village of Albuquerque (IRRVA) hosts its SIXTH annual commemoration of the life and ideals of South African patriot and President Nelson Mandela who passed away on Dec. 5, 2013. This program begins at 4:00 PM at the African American Performing Arts Center.

After spending 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela was set free in 1990. Following his release, Mandela, affectionately known to his people by his clan name “Madiba,” negotiated peace in a racially-divided, apartheid South Africa. For his efforts, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, was elected president of South Africa in 1994 and led the fight for human rights around the world by his example.

Mandela’s commitment and struggle for peace and justice, along with his spirit of compassion and forgiveness, continue to serve as a beacon of light in these troubled times.
